Stratford Guild TALK Wed 12 November REVIEW
Brilliant Mini Beasts - Speaker Juliet ten Doeschate A fascinating introduction to the amazing and intriguing world of invertebrates including wasps, butterflies, ladybirds, flies and many more. Some are very familiar and common visitors to our gardens, but others are so tiny (a mere 3mm) and so well hidden that we are not aware of them. Juliet concentrated principally upon those which inhabit her garden of 2 acres which is half woodland and half garden. Many are parasitic fe

Mapping Roman Roads
A high resolution map of Roman roads throughout the Empire was published earlier this week: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-025-06140-z . The map is open access at https://itiner-e.org/ It doesn’t really add to our knowledge locally, the lost portion of the road to the Mendips from Old Sarum (Sorbiodunum) remains lost. It is tempting to draw a straight line across the gap but as this route rises and falls across two valleys, and carts travelling it carried lead, th

Ashley Road 'parallel' crossing - cycle lane obstructed again
The surface on the cycle path near Ashley Road has been removed and will be replaced by a non-skid surface. News from 27 September The image above left, taken on Saturday 27 September, shows the crossing back in operation. Cyclists now have priority over motorists at this point, and do not legally have to dismount. There have been fears expressed on social media of the risks of cyclists not stopping and/or motorists being unaware of their presence/the priority change. Furthe

Gradidge Lane sign finally returns....
After repeated reports to Wiltshire Council, in October 2025 the sign was eventually replaced, having been removed from its post in January 2024. (To remove any doubt that was not a typo.) The Guild's 2025-26 season began on Wednesday 10 September at 7.30 pm in the Reading Room, with a talk by Colin van Geffen entitled 'The Lady who saved the Nation'. Review follows: When Mr van Geffen began his presentation by asking the audience who had heard of Lucy, no one had. This did not surprise him. By the end of his presentation, however, it seemed amazing that the life and achievements of this remarkable woman seem to have disappeared from our history. Lucy was
