Local footpath conditions
The first few feet of the Stratford end of the 'old' boardwalk were 8"- 10" underwater when this photo was taken on 20 December 2025.
To avoid a paddle (!) follow the hedge/field boundary to the right of the boardwalk until reaching the hedgeline at the top of the field, turn left and walk parallel to the boardwalk for a few hundred feet to the end of that field. Then turn left to join the boardwalk at the next junction (near the allotments).

ROUTES TO DOWNLOAD - Local residents have prepared details of some short local walks that include photos and notes about the views and points of interest. VISITORS PARKING: There is no restrictive parking in Stratford sub Castle except outside the School and near Mill Lane where there are double-yellow lines. Please be careful not to obstruct residents’ driveways. View the village layout on our Location map.

Stratford sub Castle to the new Salisbury Riverpark boardwalks
This new walk added January 2025, avoids the often flooded approach to the old boardwalk.
Avon Valley Trail leaflet, wildflower images & references and a 'Fairy Trail' for children. Produced by Salisbury City Council.
If you are using a map to explore this area, please check it is up-to-date. The route of a footpath close to Parsonage Farm was changed in 2017 but people using older maps occasionally walk across private land.

We can also recommend a visit to the nearby Devenish Nature Reserve where there are marked trails to follow on foot (but not on bikes).
