Flooding is expected - act now
Flood warning for Groundwater flooding for the Avon valley from Amesbury to the north of Salisbury - Updated 12:21pm on 28 January 2026
High groundwater levels are expected to cause flooding.
Flooding is expected from 28 January 2026
Groundwater levels in Salisbury Plain are rising. Areas that could be affected include: Avon Valley including Amesbury, Great Durnford, Upper Woodford, Middle Woodford and Lower Woodford. The groundwater level at Stoford Cross borehole has risen to 75.09m, and is expected to rise into the next week. Residents are advised to prepare property resilience measures and ensure that pumps are working where they have been installed. Residents may experience inundation of septic tanks and sewer systems. Properties may experience flooding in cellars in affected areas. Flooding of roads is expected.

If you have a pump, make sure it is working and switched on. Think about alternative power sources in case of power cuts .

The expected alert has now arrived! Images on our footpath conditions page yesterday showed the flooding observed alongside the Avon.

Flood alert in force: Groundwater flooding in the Salisbury Plain area
Flooding is possible for: Boscombe, Cholderton, Collingbourne Ducis, Hanging Langford, Hindon, Hurdcott, Idmiston, Newton Tony, Orcheston, Porton, Salisbury, Shipton Bellinger, Shrewton, Stratford Sub Castle, Tidworth, Tilshead, Tisbury, Wilton, Winterbourne Stoke and Woodford
High groundwater levels may lead to flooding.
Flooding is possible from 26 January 2026 onwards.
Areas at risk include areas around the Till and the Wylye Valley. Flooding of roads and fields is possible. Locations most affected will be low lying land and roads near rivers. Further rainfall is forecast later today and overnight.
We are closely monitoring the situation.
Residents are advised to prepare property resilience measures and ensure that pumps are working where they have been installed.
