As the congregation prepares to commemorate the St Lawrence Patronal Festival on Sunday 27 July, the colours of the flowers decorating the church have been carefully chosen by the St Lawrence Flower Team to represent 'fire'.
St Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome. He was martyred in 258 CE during the persecution of the Christians ordered by the Roman emperor Valerian. The traditional account of how Lawrence was martyred was that he was placed on a gridiron underneath which were hot coals - hence the symbolic gridiron sometimes included in artworks of St Lawrence.
