Residents invited to shape Salisbury River Park proposals

You may have noticed small posters promoting a survey for the 'Salisbury River Park' attached to posts and railings around the riverside footpaths.

At last evening's Salisbury City Council Meeting, Mayor John Walsh, a local Stratford resident, urged the public to respond to the Wiltshire Council survey. His comment came after city councillors had raised the question of whether sufficient consultation had taken place before introducing another scheme, 'People Friendly Salisbury' which had been discontinued only a few weeks after being implemented. "Now is your chance to let Wiltshire Council have your views" said John Walsh.

A statement from the Environment Agency:

"We are working in partnership with Wiltshire Council in the creation of Salisbury River Park. This is a joint consultation on phase 1 of this River Park and on the Salisbury River Park Masterplan. The River Park will reduce flood risk within Salisbury city whilst enhancing habitats and public enjoyment, improving fish passage and reducing the flood defence maintenance burden along the River Avon. We are seeking your views to guide the design and ensure the scheme serves the city in the best way possible."

The first phase of the River Park project, supported by £6 million of funding from the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, will provide critical flood prevention measures and environmental improvements in Salisbury's central car park, the Ashley Road Open Space and Fisherton Recreation Ground.

The Ashley Road Open Space opposite the fire station is on the walking route along the boardwalk from Stratford sub Castle into Salisbury. The Environment Agency were observed to be digging some test trenches in that area last weekend.

The consultation survey can be completed online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/salisbury-future.
