UPDATE: the hole has been filled in but the fencing around it remains.
Original News story 9 April 2024
A hole has appeared in the triangular field immediately north of Hudson’s Field. The area is rich in the archaeology of the suburbs of Old Sarum so this could be due to a collapse of manmade material. The Old Sarum Landscapes Project had studied the adjacent field (to the north west) and shown buildings and roads.
Sinkholes can occur naturally though, when mildly acidic rain dissolves the chalk beneath.
