Old Sarum Airfield during WW2

Old sarum Airfield.jpg

This is an aerial view of Old Sarum Monument and Airfield, taken by the Luftwaffe in September 1940.

The lines (arrowed) on the airfield are fake hedges to camouflage the airstrip, so it looks as though it is divided into fields. This was cunning by day, but the bombers came by night.

To confuse them there was also an entire “Q Type” decoy Old Sarum Airfield lit up in the Clarendon Estate 1941-42 at night. Nothing survives there now.
