Stratford sub Castle Guild 2019/2020 Programme

The Guild meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from September - June.
Talks start at 7.30 pm in the Reading Room, SP1 3LL Stratford sub Castle. Membership is £10 pa.

2019

Wed 11 September: Terry Edwards – ‘Women of Oman’

Terry will tell us of her experiences helping the women in the mountain area of Salalah (South Oman) where her husband set up a school in 1977, illustrating her talk with objects depicting life in Oman. 

 

Wed 9 October: Christine Mason – ‘Rex Whistler’ (revised date)

Salisbury Museum volunteer Christine Mason, who has been working on the Rex Whistler archive since 2014, will talk about Whistler’s work, life and untimely death. 

 

Wed 13 November: The Halo Trust (revised date)

We will hear about the work of the world's largest humanitarian mine clearance organisation and how it helps vulnerable communities in 25 countries get back on their feet following conflict.

 

Wed 11 December: Members Christmas Social Evening - includes buffet, first drink and entertainment. There will be a Licensed bar and a raffle.

2020

Wed 8 January: Micky Foster- ‘Wives of Wilton House’

Between them the 18 Earls of Pembroke at Wilton House have had 26 wives.  Micky’s talk will focus on 3 of them to show that the women’s lives were just as important and dramatic as the men’s!

 

Wed 12 February: Sarah Buttenshaw – ‘The Falkland Islands and South Georgia’

Sarah’s illustrated talk will take us on a photographic journey through this remote area’s wildlife, scenery and history.

 

Wed 11 March: Steve Herra – ‘The Body through the Porthole’

Steve, who worked as a purser on the QE2, will bring us an intriguing naval murder mystery from 1947 and invite us to act as the jury to determine if the accused was guilty or not and find out what happened after the trial. 

 

Wed 8 April: Colin van Geffen – ‘Lawrence:  Before and After Arabia’

Lawrence of Arabia’s legend is well documented in books and film. Colin’s talk explores the man behind the myth and reveals some surprising facts including a connection to Old Sarum.

 

Wed 13 May: AGM  Followed by Liz Waterman – ‘New Zealand via Bangkok’

Guild member Liz will share some of the sights, scenery, wildlife and off the beaten track experiences of her travels to and in New Zealand.

 

Wed 10 June: Members Summer Social.
