A vineyard in Stratford

Four different varieties of hardy, white grape-vines have been planted in the field between Gradidge Lane and St Lawrence Church.

Prior to planting, the field had been ploughed and drew the attention of local archaeologists. With the permission of the landowner, local resident Alix Smith who is a licensed detectorist, swept over the area but reports that "Nothing of real interest was found."

Alix accompanied by Alex Langlands of the Old Sarum Landscapes Project team also field-walked the site. Their verdict: The soil level is about a foot higher than any likely archaeology, perhaps because material (colluvium) has slipped down from the slopes of the hill-fort; or maybe the area was deliberately built-up when the modern road was established.
