Eleanor of Aquitaine was imprisoned in Old Sarum Castle on several occasions between 1173 and 1189.
Thomas Pitt (1653 - 1726) for some years lived at Mawarden Court. His eldest son Robert was father of William Pitt, often called 'Pitt the Elder'.
Mrs Mary Elizabeth King, a vicar's wife, lived in Stratford sub Castle for 36 years and must have played a significant role in the village. Her most lasting achievement is the erection of the Reading Room in 1881.
